"Once in a Lifetime, Visit Zenkoji" — 1 Hour from Hakuba

There's an old Japanese saying: "Once in a lifetime, visit Zenkoji." Zenkoji Temple (善光寺) in Nagano City is a non-denominational Buddhist temple with roughly 1,400 years of history. Its main hall is designated a National Treasure.

From Hakuba, it's about a 1-hour drive along the Olympic Road (Prefectural Routes 31/33) — smooth, scenic, and no highway required. A rest day from skiing, your last day in Hakuba, or a snowy morning when you want culture instead of powder — Zenkoji is always a good call.

Zenkoji Highlights — 3 Must-Do Experiences

① Okaidan Meguri (Pitch-Dark Tunnel Pilgrimage)

Beneath the main hall lies a completely dark corridor. You walk through total blackness, feeling along the wall, searching for the "Key to Paradise" (gokuraku no jomae). Touch it, and you're promised rebirth in the Pure Land. It's an eerie, unforgettable experience you won't find at any other temple.

② Climb the Sanmon (Main Gate)

The massive Sanmon gate is an Important Cultural Property. Climb to the upper level for a panoramic view of Nagano City. Look closely at the "善光寺" characters on the plaque — 5 hidden doves are concealed within the brushstrokes.

③ Temple-Town Street Food

The Nakamise-dori and surrounding streets are a food lover's paradise. Shinshu soba (buckwheat noodles), oyaki (stuffed dumplings), Yawataya Isogorou shichimi (seven-spice blend), gelato — you can easily spend an hour just eating your way through.

2027: The Once-Every-7-Years Gokaicho

Zenkoji's biggest event is the Gokaicho (御開帳) — a special ceremony held roughly once every 7 years where a normally hidden sacred statue is revealed to the public. The next Gokaicho runs from April 4 to June 19, 2027 (77 days). The previous one in 2022 drew around 7 million visitors.

If you're in the Hakuba area during spring 2027, this is an absolute must-see.

💡 Gokaicho tip: A 10-meter Eko-bashira pillar is erected in front of the main hall and connected to the sacred statue by a cord. Touching the pillar is said to bestow the same blessings as touching the statue itself. Expect crowds — but it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
