Chapter 01
Kurobe Dam & Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Omachi's greatest asset is its position as the Nagano-side gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route — one of the most spectacular mountain journeys on earth. Starting from Ogizawa, you cross by electric bus, ropeway, and trolleybus all the way to Toyama, passing Kurobe Dam, Kurobe Lake, Daikanbo, Murodo, and Tateyama along the way.

Kurobe Dam
At 186 meters, Japan's largest arch dam. The thundering discharge — over 10 tons of water per second — is a sight that stops you in your tracks. From the observation deck, the deep cobalt blue of Kurobe Lake framed by the Ushiro-Tateyama peaks is simply unforgettable. Drive to Ogizawa from central Omachi in about 30 minutes.

A high-altitude plateau at 2,450 meters. Adjacent to Mikurigaike Onsen — the highest hot spring in Japan. Alpine wildflowers in early summer, ptarmigan sightings in August, golden grasslands in autumn, and deep snow in winter make this a place that rewards every season.

Chapter 02
Northern Alps — Hiking & Trekking

The Ushiro-Tateyama range lines up peak after famous peak — Jiigatake, Kashimayari, Goryu, Karamatsu, Shirouma. With a rental car from Omachi, reaching early-morning trailheads is effortless. Routes that are impractical by public transport become simple day trips when you have your own wheels.

Hakuba — A Mountain Resort for All Seasons

About 30 minutes from Omachi by car, Hakuba village hosted the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and has grown into one of Japan's premier international mountain resorts. World-class skiing and snowboarding in winter, hiking and outdoor adventures in summer, and blazing autumn foliage — there is always a reason to visit.

Chapter 04
Matsumoto & Zenkoji — History & Castle Towns

About 50 minutes south of Omachi by car, Matsumoto is a historic castle town built around one of Japan's most beautiful National Treasure castles. Head north instead and you reach Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. Both are perfectly suited for a day trip from Omachi.

Matsumoto Castle
Known as the "Crow Castle" for its striking black exterior, Matsumoto Castle is Japan's oldest surviving National Treasure keep. Surrounded by a picturesque moat, it looks different — and equally beautiful — in every season. The surrounding castle town streets are lined with craft breweries, soba restaurants, and traditional shotengai arcades.

Zenkoji Temple
One of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples with approximately 1,400 years of history. Located at the heart of Nagano City and revered across all sects, Zenkoji draws pilgrims and visitors alike. The Monzen-machi (temple town) approach is wonderful for a stroll. About 70 minutes from Omachi by car.

Chapter 05
Snow Monkeys & Nozawa Onsen

The Jigokudani Monkey Park — home of the famous "Snow Monkeys" — draws visitors from around the world to watch Japanese macaques bathing in hot springs. Winter is when it's most magical, and the drive from Omachi through the Shiga Kogen highlands is a scenic journey in its own right.

World Famous
Jigokudani Monkey Park — Snow Monkeys
The only place in the world where wild monkeys regularly bathe in hot springs. Featured in NHK and BBC documentaries and endlessly photographed, the Snow Monkeys are one of Japan's most iconic wildlife experiences. December through March offers the best viewing — snow-covered surroundings with steaming water and laid-back macaques.
